WEB: Netherlands edge Turkey to set up England semi-final

Oranje fought back from a goal down with an own goal by Mert Muldur completing their comeback.

The Netherlands booked a place in the semi-finals of the European Championship on Saturday after edging a tense quarter-final against Turkey 2-1 in Amsterdam.

After Turkey took a shock lead through Burak Yilmaz's penalty in the 15th minute, the Dutch hit back with two goals in the second half. First, Donyell Malen pounced on a loose ball to equalise in the 46th minute. Then, just six minutes later, there was a bizarre twist as Turkey defender Mert Muldur turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Denzel Dumfries.

The win sets up a clash with England in the semi-finals on Wednesday, while Turkey's impressive run at the tournament comes to an end.

Netherlands' remarkable comeback

The Netherlands' victory was all the more impressive given that they had to come from behind after Turkey took an early lead. The Dutch controlled possession for long periods of the game but struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half.

However, the Oranje showed their fighting spirit in the second half and were rewarded by Malen's equaliser. The winner was a moment of fortune but it was no more than the Dutch deserved.

The Netherlands will now go into the semi-finals full of confidence and will be hoping to reach their first European Championship final since 2000.
